On Thursday I heard that Atarah Ben Tovim, the flute teacher who taught me at Huddersfield School of Music from 1975 to '77, has died.


This is sad news. The last time I saw Atarah was in 2009 at the British Flute Convention in Manchester. She commissioned a piece from me - Chinese Steps - for flute choir.

As a teacher she was brilliant although, sometimes, completely honest and forthright. As an encourager, unparalleled.
