On Thursday I heard that Atarah Ben Tovim, the flute teacher who taught me at Huddersfield School of Music from 1975 to '77, has died.
This is sad news. The last time I saw Atarah was in 2009 at the British Flute Convention in Manchester. She commissioned a piece from me - Chinese Steps - for flute choir.

I’m so sorry to hear about Atarah Ben Tovim’s passing. It’s clear she left an incredible mark as both a teacher and an encourager. Her honesty and dedication are truly inspiring. As someone who appreciates the depth of mentorship in any field—even for PhD Literature Review Writers—her legacy reminds us how transformative great guidance can be.
